Specifically, if you make these three moves, you'll end up with less money flowing into your bank account each month as a retiree. The first move guaranteed to shrink your monthly Social Security check is claiming benefits before age 70. While you can start getting benefit checks as young as 62, this will make your payment much smaller.

If you're eligible to receive SSI benefits, you will get two payments in the month of May: one on May 1, the other on May 30. SSI payments go out on day one of any given month, but since June 1 falls on a weekend, that month's payment will come early, on May 30.
