Seven-hundred Marines have completed training and will soon be working alongside National Guard forces in the greater Los Angeles area, according to the Northern Command, which released a statement Wednesday saying they would start their work “within the next 48 hours.

The Department of Defense said the 700 Marines from Twentynine Palms will protect federal agents and property with the California National Guard.

As anti-immigration raid protests continue for the sixth day in Los Angeles, a group of 30 regional mayors came together to stand in support and solidarity.

While many demonstrations against the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency have been peaceful, with marchers chanting slogans and carrying signs, others have led to clashes with police who have sometimes used chemical irritants to disperse crowds. Hundreds have been arrested.

More than 700 Marines based out of the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in California have been mobilized to respond to the protests in Los Angeles, and the troops will join the thousands of National Guard members who were activated by President Donald Trump over the weekend without the consent of California’s governor or LA’s mayor.

The deployment marks a sharp escalation in the military's role in domestic unrest in the city caused by immigration raids by the Trump administration.
