Grammy-winning artist Doechii accepted her first BET Award Monday. But as she held the award for best female hip-hop artist, she couldn’t ignore what was going on outside the televised show at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

The rap star used her acceptance speech to address protests against immigration raids in Los Angeles, to which Trump deployed National Guard troops on Monday.

Doechii made the most of her first BET Award win, telling an audience of honorees and attendees at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Monday that she felt a “responsibility as an artist” to address nation-wide conflicts on stage.
