Russian leader Vladimir Putin agreed to have the US and Europe provide Ukraine with NATO-style security guarantees as part of a deal to end the war, President Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff said Sunday.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Monday NATO membership for Ukraine was not under discussion but that there was a discussion on "Article 5" type security guarantees for the country that Russia invaded in February 2022.
Trump did not rule out the possibility of American troops helping to guarantee peace between Ukraine and Russia should the leaders reach an agreement.
