Yankees starting pitcher Luis Gil shut down for at least six weeks with high-grade lat strain
Yankees hit with injury disaster as Luis Gil out at least three months — if not much more
The reigning AL Rookie of the Year was diagnosed with a high-grade lat strain, manager Aaron Boone revealed on Monday at George M. Steinbrenner Field, which comes with at least a six-week shutdown, though the Yankees were still gathering more information and opinions from doctors.
Even the usually upbeat Aaron Boone sounded discouraged about this one. New York Yankees right-hander Luis Gil will be shut down from throwing for six weeks with a strained lat muscle, putting his 2025 season in jeopardy. That means he is at least three months away from pitching in a major league game—if he returns this season at all.
As Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated shared, the side-arming righty has some downright nasty movement on his pitches to compensate for the loss of velocity. Effross lost 2.5 mph on his sinker but added 3.4 inches of downward movement. His slider dropped 2.9 mph but gained 3.5 inches of horizontal movement.
