Cases of Melioidosis, a bacterial infection found in tropical climates that is sometimes referred to as a 'mudbug', have sharply risen in Australia since the start of this year.

Over the weekend, residents of Brisbane, Australia, were bracing for the impact of Tropical Cyclone Alfred. The storm was downgraded to a tropical low, and made landfall on the mainland on Saturday. It was the first storm of its kind in the area in 51 years.

The Australian government said on Monday it would activate financial support for workers who lost income due to ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred, which has caused widespread flooding, power outages and property damage across the east coast.

Residents in parts of south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales have begun the mammoth task of cleaning up from ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred's wild weather.

Australians should not need another reminder to proactively reduce the damage caused by extreme weather events. But Alfred has certainly provided one.
