The winds fueling Southern California wildfires form when a high-pressure system develops over the Great Basin in Utah and Nevada

The winds are common in California in the colder months, but they can sometimes help spread dangerous wildfires.

The devastating fires across Southern California are being driven by the Santa Ana winds, as incredibly dry and windy conditions continue to heighten the fire danger

Meteorologists said there was a chance the winds would be as severe as those that fueled the Palisades and Eaton fires, but that different locations would likely be affected.

As the catastrophic wildfires continue to rage in Southern California, some Los Angeles residents are not waiting around to see if their city survives. Instead, they are packing up and moving across the country to the relative safety of the Northeast.

National Weather Service offices across Southern California are warning residents of an increase in weather conditions that are conducive to rapid fire growth. Meteorologists are most concerned about conditions from Monday afternoon through Wednesday morning when winds will be at their peak and relative humidity will be low.

A strong and dry Santa Ana event with extreme fire weather conditions is increasingly likely,” the NWS said in a statement. “This event may be considerably stronger for many areas than the event that we experienced this past Monday through Wednesday.
