Della Maddalena (18-2 MMA, 8-0 UFC) dethroned Belal Muhammad (24-4 MMA, 15-4 UFC) to become welterweight champion in Saturday's UFC 315 main event at Bell Centre in Montreal. He was called out by lightweight champion Makhachev (27-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC), a challenge he welcomed.

Muhammad leaves Montreal without the title he won in July by defeating Leon Edwards at UFC 304. The result also marked Muhammad's first loss since a unanimous decision against Geoff Neal in January 2019, ending a 10-fight winning streak, which also included a no contest against Edwards.
