T he U.S. and Japan have reached a trade agreement under which the longtime U.S. will face a 15% tariff—down from a previously threatened 25%—President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday, as Japan’s Prime Minister hailed the move as a “new golden era” in the relationship between the two countries.

President Donald Trump has announced a trade framework with Japan, placing a 15% tax on goods imported from that nation.

That rate is lower than the 24% that Trump threatened Japan with on April 2 and the 25% that he said he would hit Japanese imports with in a letter on July 7. Before Trump's current term, the effective U.S. tariff rate on Japanese imports was less than 2%, according to World Bank data.
