Multiple unconfirmed tornadoes were reported Wednesday night as a powerful storm swept across the state. Here's how NWS determines what is a tornado.
The National Weather Service of Indianapolis confirmed Thursday afternoon that Hamilton and Hendricks county had been hit by tornadoes.
The National Weather Service will assess damage Thursday to determine if any tornadoes touched down. More than a dozen Tornado Warnings were issued in central Illinois on Wednesday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has been conducting surveys on the damage and initially determined that seven tornadoes touched down. On Wednesday, they confirmed two additional tornadoes, bringing the total to nine. Then, on Thursday, the count went up again by one, bringing the total up to 10.

The tornado was confirmed by the NWS in Highland County just after 1 a.m. A strong debris signature was seen just northeast of Fayetteville around 1:20 a.m. A few minutes later, the NWS issued a Confirmed Tornado Warning for Highland, Clinton and Brown counties.
Tornados have been reported in at least eight states this week, after powerful storms swept across the country.
This could lead to widespread flooding. There is a potential for double-digit rainfall in southern Indiana through the weekend. A wind advisory is in effect until 1 a.m. Thursday across most of the state.
