The state's surgeon general has already convinced at least 11 municipalities to stop adding the naturally occurring mineral into the water, using his high profile as Florida’s top health officer and a recent official recommendation against fluoride use.

In Buffalo, New York, city officials recently brought fluoride back online following a class action lawsuit from residents. The suit was filed after an investigative reporter found that the city had not been adding fluoride to its water for nine years, unbeknownst to residents.

Some recent studies found fluoride exposure is associated with cognitive impacts in children, but the research isn’t conclusive. Still, many Central Floridians say there’s enough evidence to warrant concern.
